Democracy

Democracy is the foundation of the UK’s political system. This value is based on the idea that everyone should have an equal say in how their country is run, and that the government should be accountable to the people.

At Esteem Valley Academy democracy is taken very seriously. Children are actively encouraged to have a voice and share their views and opinions regularly through various mediums. Using the Votes for Schools programme, students vote on a topic on a weekly basis and can compare their votes both locally and nationally. Tutor time activities embed the skill of debating whilst engaging pupils in topical issues from around the world.

The Rule of Law

Respect for the rule of law means that everyone in society is treated equally and fairly, and that everyone follows the same rules and laws. This value promotes a sense of order and stability in society and helps to prevent crime and other harmful behaviours. The UK justice system is a large part of this, including laws, police officers and courts.

Individual Liberty

Individual liberty allows people to pursue their own goals and interests, providing they do not harm others. This British Value is based on the idea that people should be free to make their own decisions and choices within the bounds of the law, of course.

At Esteem Valley Academy, children are actively encouraged to make decisions and choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As an academy we educate and provide boundaries for young children to take risks and make choices safely. Children are encouraged to understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms, and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through events such as Safer Internet Day.

In addition, Students are encouraged to involve themselves within community life. We hold fund raising events, to support local and national organisations.

Mutual Respect and Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

Promoting the understanding and acceptance of people from different backgrounds and with different beliefs; helping to create a more inclusive and diverse society.

Mutual respect plays an important part in building positive relationships and is at the heart of our values; a key expectation that forms part of our ethos. Children learn that their behaviours have an effect on their own rights, and those of others. All members of the academy community are encouraged to treat each other with tolerance and respect.

All three of our Esteem Valley Academy sites are situated in areas which are not culturally diverse, therefore we place a great emphasis on promoting diversity with our students. We address this issue either directly, through the inclusion of stories and celebrations from a variety of faiths and cultures and our PSHRE teaching, reinforces this.
