Our Curriculum – Primary

At our Bennerley site, we support pupils from Primary through to Key Stage 3 who have either been permanently excluded or are at risk of permanent exclusion from mainstream education. Our focus is to positively re-engage pupils in learning and prepare them for the next stage of their educational journey. This may include reintegration into mainstream education, transition to a more appropriate specialist setting, or movement between our own sites and key stages, where appropriate.

Three Distinct Pathways to Success

Our Primary provision at Esteem Valley Academy is designed to meet the diverse needs of our pupils through three carefully structured pathways: Exploration, Adventure, and Discovery.

Exploration Pathway

This pathway follows a traditional primary model, delivering academic lessons focused on core subjects and aligned with the National Curriculum. It also includes dedicated Personal Development through our REO curriculum, with a strong emphasis on social skills and emotional literacy. Pupils access a broad and balanced curriculum, including English, Maths, Art, Science, Humanities, PSHE, and Sport.

Intent
To develop strong academic foundations alongside essential social and emotional skills, enabling pupils to regulate their behaviour and make sustained academic progress.

Implementation

  • Teaching is carefully planned to meet National Curriculum expectations and adapted to suit individual needs and learning styles.
  • Personal Development is embedded throughout the day and explicitly taught through the REO curriculum, promoting social communication, emotional regulation, and collaboration.
  • Staff establish clear routines, consistent expectations, and supportive strategies to create a safe, engaging learning environment.
  • Ongoing assessment informs responsive teaching and targeted support.

Impact
Pupils make consistent progress across academic subjects and develop secure foundations in literacy and numeracy. They show increased confidence, resilience, and improved emotional regulation. Through a broad curriculum, pupils develop curiosity, creativity, and a positive attitude to learning, preparing them well for the next stage of education.

Adventure Pathway

This pathway is designed to support pupils who are new to the setting or who require an increased focus on Personal Development alongside core academic learning. Pupils attend in small groups of up to three for 2.5-hour sessions, either in the morning or afternoon, allowing for a highly personalised and supportive approach.

Intent
To support pupils in re-engaging with education by developing core academic skills alongside social, emotional, and behavioural regulation.

Implementation

  • The curriculum combines core academic learning with targeted Personal Development, including elements of the REO curriculum.
  • Staff use consistent routines, clear expectations, and nurturing approaches to support engagement, communication, and emotional development.
  • Sessions are highly personalised, with a strong focus on individual needs and readiness to learn.
  • Ongoing assessment ensures provision remains responsive and adaptive.
  • Social and personal development is explicitly taught and reinforced.
  • Transitions are carefully planned to prepare pupils for their next stage.

Impact
Pupils develop increased confidence, improved social interaction, and greater emotional awareness. They become more settled and demonstrate improved readiness to learn. Over time, pupils make progress in both Personal Development and academic areas, enabling them to access a broader curriculum and transition successfully into more formal learning environments.

Discovery Pathway

This pathway is designed for pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) who benefit from short, focused one-to-one sessions. It integrates targeted SEND outcomes with engaging, play-based learning, creating a supportive environment where pupils can build confidence and prepare for classroom learning.

Intent
To provide a personalised and nurturing environment that meets the individual needs of pupils with SEND, with a focus on communication, social development, and readiness for learning.

Implementation

  • Pupils access short, structured one-to-one sessions tailored to their specific SEND outcomes.
  • Learning is delivered through engaging, play-based, and practical activities to promote motivation and sustained attention.
  • Staff use highly personalised strategies, adapting resources and communication approaches to meet individual needs.
  • Communication and social skills are a key focus, embedded throughout all sessions.
  • Consistent routines and a nurturing environment support pupils’ sense of security.
  • Ongoing assessment ensures provision remains targeted and responsive.

Impact
Pupils develop increased confidence, engagement, and readiness for classroom learning. They make progress towards individual SEND targets, particularly in communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation. Over time, pupils become more independent and better able to participate in group learning, supporting successful transitions and broader curriculum access.

Overall Impact (All Pathways)

Across all pathways, Esteem Valley Academy is committed to equipping pupils with the skills they need to succeed. Pupils are supported to regulate their behaviour, communicate effectively, build positive relationships, and achieve academic progress. This ensures they are well-prepared for successful transition to the most appropriate next stage in their education.
